A security breach at SL Data Services, LLC, operating under Propertyrec, exposed over 600,000 sensitive records online, including court records, vehicle records, and property ownership reports in 644,869 unencrypted and publicly accessible PDF files. Roughly 95% of these documents contained comprehensive personal data like names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and criminal history, posing significant risks of identity theft and targeted phishing attacks. Researcher Jeremiah Fowler discovered and reported the breach to Website Planet. However, public access to the database was only restricted over a week later, during which the number of files grew. The duration of exposure remains unknown. Experts emphasize the urgent need for stronger security measures, such as encryption, password protection, access controls, and regular audits, to avoid such incidents in the future. This breach echoes similar vulnerabilities seen in other data protection failures within the industry.
