Costa Rica’s State-Owned Energy Company Hit With Ransomware

Costa Rica’s state-owned energy company, RECOPE, experienced a ransomware attack on November 27, 2024, forcing a shift to manual operations for fuel distribution. The incident disrupted digital payment systems, prompting RECOPE to assure the public of sufficient fuel supplies. In response, U.S. cybersecurity experts arrived to assist in restoring systems. This attack follows a series of cyber incidents targeting Costa Rican institutions, including a significant ransomware attack in 2022 that led to a national state of emergency.
